Consists of reel number 63 (i.e., container 82) of the Library of Congress's Schoolcraft papers, the "Speech, Article & Book File." It contains the manuscript "Vitreology, or the Art of Smelting," 1817, said to be the earliest technical treatise on glassmaking written in America. Other manuscripts and printed items appear on this reel, including some on glass, Native American Indians, and minerals.
